Amelia’s eyes flew open in horror. The sun was streaming in through the little cabin windows. She sat up, allowing the coverlet to fall and expose her nakedness. Gabe was naked, too, still asleep beside her. In spite of her anxiety, she took a moment to enjoy the sight of him. The hair on his body was much darker than his blond head and mustache. His upper body was tanned as if he spent time out of doors with no shirt, though she didn’t know how this could be when he spent all of his time inside a smoky saloon. Perhaps it was just from the week he had worked out at the mine. But the muscles in his arms and chest had not developed over just a week. Nor had they come from dealing cards.

Scolding herself for her indulgence, she pulled the coverlet back up to her chest and smoothed it over him, then bent to give his shoulder a tentative push. She had barely touched him when his hand snaked up and grabbed her wrist, pulling her down on the bed and underneath him in one smooth move. She could swear that he had been sleeping only seconds before, but there was no doubt about the fact that he was already aroused. “Spying on me, were you?” he growled. “There’s a penalty for that.”

He turned her in his arms and gave her a playful slap on the bottom that turned into a caress as their bodies moved together once again in a quick frenzy of passion.

Gabe collapsed on top of her, his body damp and sticking. “Good morning,” he said lazily.

Amelia lay underneath him with a silly grin on her face. She hadn’t realized it would be like this…making love, being in love. So all consuming. So explosive. So frequent. He had awakened her in the middle of the night with apologies that proved completely unnecessary after just a few minutes of attention by his hands and lips. And they’d made long, leisurely love in the dead stillness of the night before once again sinking into sleep in each other’s arms. And now this…morning thing.

“How are you feeling, tenderfoot?” he asked after several minutes.

“Tender,” she replied ruefully.

He rolled off her, his eyes worried. “Damn. I…I ought to be shot for a randy bastard.” He put his hand over her private place and made a gentle circle. The warmth of his palm felt good. Amazingly, she wasn’t the least bit self-conscious at the intimacy. She’d given herself to Gabe, and there were no reservations to her gift.

She smiled up at him. “Don’t say that. I’m all right.”

“I should have been gentler. We shouldn’t—”

She reached up and smoothed the hairs of his mustache, cutting off his words. “I wouldn’t change last night for anything in the world,” she said.

“There’s one thing I would change,” he said, unexpectedly.

“What?”

He gave her a quick kiss, then threw his long leg over her, climbed out of bed and went across the room to rummage in a saddlebag that lay on the floor by the door.
